Compressor fridges are loud. They vibrate. In a bedroom or home office, that can be annoying. Thermoelectric cooling solves this in a different way. This article explains how the technology works and where its limits are.
How thermoelectric cooling works
A Peltier element is an electrothermal converter. It turns electric current into a temperature difference. Current flows through the element. One side gets warm, the other gets cold. This is called the Peltier effect. On many devices, you can reverse the current direction. Then the element heats instead of cools.
During cooling, the heat that is produced has to leave the device. How this happens depends on the device type.
In a cooler box, two fans move the heat. The outer fan, on the lid, releases the heat to the outside air. The inner fan moves air inside the box. It carries the cold from the cooling fins into the interior.
The Retro Mini Fridge has no fan. A heat pipe moves the heat instead. This is a sealed tube filled with R600a gas. When the liquid touches heat, it evaporates right away. This pulls heat away from the Peltier element. When the gas turns back into liquid, it flows down into the lower tank. This is why the mini fridge runs so quietly.
Advantages over compressor cooling
No compressor means less noise and less vibration. The mini fridge also has no fan. That means no moving parts on this side either, and no extra noise source.
Many devices can cool and heat with the same technology. It depends on the current direction through the Peltier element.
The limit you should know
Thermoelectric cooling lowers the temperature relative to room temperature. It does not reach a fixed low point the way a compressor fridge does. For drinks or cosmetics, this is enough. The technology is not made for freezing.
